10.00 Registration and coffee.
10.30 Joseph Ritson, Researching World War II and family history.
Joseph has been researching World War II, through family history, oral history interviews and archives in English and French. He is a volunteer for the County Archives, the BBC ‘People’s War’ Project (2003-06) and the Cleator Moor World Wars Project. He has also researched WWI.
11.30 Morning tea/coffee and biscuits.
11.45 Phil Hazlehurst, The Jefferson Rum Story.
Why the Jeffersons were important to the rum trade and to Whitehaven, and why Whitehaven was important to England. With a little bit of Rum. Story to add some spice!
13.00 A hot two-course lunch served in the restaurant overlooking the Irish Sea.

14.15 Alan Cleaver, Cumbrian Postal Paths.
The author of The Postal Paths talks about the Cumbrian postal routes walked or cycled by rural postmen and women. Alan will outline the routes (which are all public paths and could be up to 20 miles long) and reveal something of the loyal public servants who walked them six days a week in all weathers until the mid-1970s, when vans took over rural deliveries.

A nostalgic look back through time from Patricia’s postcard collection of the area.
