About Cumbria
About Cumbria
Cumbria, England's second largest ceremonial county and including the Lake District with Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain, is located in the North West of England and is surrounded by Scotland to the north, Northumberland and Durham to the east, North Yorkshire to the south east and Lancashire to the south. The western border is the Irish Sea. See the clickable parish map
Cumbria was actually created in 1974 from the old counties of Cumberland and Westmorland plus small parts of Lancashire (Furness) and Yorkshire (Sedbergh). The boundaries were further adjusted in 1989 which resulted in Cumbria gaining a further 9 people from Northumberland but losing a small amount of land to North Yorkshire.
Local government was reorganised in 2023 and 2 Unitary Authorities were created from the county of Cumbria
- Cumberland (though much smaller than the old county of Cumberland)
- Westmorland and Furness (including the eastern part of the old county of Cumberland)
